July 1, 2020. No one forgets the day they first hear “You have cancer.” You wonder immediately how quickly it will kill you, or if you will get more time. In my case, it’s five years later. I am grateful for this extra time. However, with my poor quality of life, I have decided to stop doing any scans. The growth in my lung may be cancerous. We don’t know. But I am proceeding without treating it. For some, this might seem like surrender. I view it as a conscious decision to savor my days without clouding them with anxiety about how or if my cancer is spreading. I enjoy today. You should, too.
